Where was he?
It was now a bright moonlit night; the trees seemed very tall and the shadows so dark.
Quoof stood on a tree stump and howled at the moon.
Qu ..qu..quow..ow..ow..owl!!!"
"What on earth is that awful noise?" a voice asked crossly.
"It was me" answered Quoof meekly, "I always howl at the moon, but where are you?"
"I'm up here in the tree you silly looking dog. I know it's time for me to get up but you need not have awoken me with that noise."
Quoof searched the trees for the speaker; a great flapping of wings and the Owl landed on the stump.

"I am an Owl, I have a mask, to eat I nightly prowl. I feed on mice which are very nice. What are you? I now will ask, before I say too - wit - too - woo!" having spoken the Owl turned his head around and looked down his back.
Quoof thought this very strange but said politely "I am Quoof the duckbilled dog; but, please tell me how do you turn your head round like that?"
"It is because I'm an Owl, all Owls can do this." the Owl turned its head completely round and back again.

"Boobook! Boobook!" a voice called in the darkness.
"Boobook." answered another.
"Wh..wh.. what was that?" stammered Quoof, getting a fright from the new sound.
"Oh! You silly dog, that is only my cousin the Boobook Owl calling to his family."
"But why haven't I heard him before?" Quoof asked.
"Because we sleep during the day and only call each other at night. Now I must go and hunt some food for my breakfast." With a rapid beating of his huge wings the Owl flew away.
"H..h..has he gone?" a tiny voice squeaked from the base of the tree stump.

Quoof jumped down.
"Where are you? Oh, there you are. Yes Mr, Owl has gone, but who are you?"
"I an a mouse and Mr. Owl would eat me if he saw me." Squeaky replied.
"If Owls eat you, what do you eat?" asked Quoof.
"I eat seeds and nuts that fall from the flowers and the trees but I love a piece of fresh cheese."
"What is cheese?"
"Cheese is a lovely food that man makes," said Squeaky imagining himself eating a large piece of tasty cheese. "But I don't eat cheese very often as man lives so far away."
