Quoof lay on the veranda and thought, "what could he eat?"
He had managed to drink some milk his little Mistress had put out for him but he was so hungry.
Tiny Mrs. Blue Wren was busy hopping on the step catching and eating ants.
"You
eats ants," said Quoof, "but what can I eat with my
duck-bill?"
"Kee! Kee! I don't know;
perhaps Mr. Blue Wren will know. Here he comes now."
Mr.
Blue Wren didn't know either.
"Quoof must ask bigger birds." he said.
First
Quoof met Mr. Rooster at the bottom of the garden.
"Mr. Rooster, what can I eat?" Quoof asked politely.
"Cockerdoodoldoo!"
crowed Mr. Rooster, "you'd better ask the ducks on the creek."
and strutted proudly away followed by Mrs. Hen and her chicks.
"Now that is a good idea," thought Quoof and called, "Thank you! Mr. Rooster" as he squeezed under the back gate and ran into the bush in search of the ducks.
In the shallow water of the creek the Pelican was catching fish for his
dinner.
"Have you seen the ducks Mr. Pelican?" asked Quoof.
"Why
do you want the ducks?" asked Mr. Pelican.
"To ask them what I should eat with my duck-bill." said Quoof.
"Eat fish." said Mr. Pelican
"But cats eat fish." Quoof imagined himself with whiskers like a cat and laughed.

"So do
ducks!" answered Mr. Pelican, the pouch beneath his beak growing
larger as he caught more fish.
