Chapter One; Part 1

Duke the dog woke up, yawned and barked for his breakfast.
"Quoof! Quoof!"
Quoof?! What ever could have happened to his woof! It just did not sound right.
"Quoof! Quoof!"

He put his left fore-paw to his face - what was this hard thing?
He put his right fore-paw to his face.
"I'll look into the fish pond to see what I have on my face."

"Well! This is silly! I know I'm a funny sort of dog, but a Duck-bill?
Duke was so upset that he pulled his long ears over his eyes so no one could see his tears.

He cried for a long time for he knew from that moment he would be known as Quoof, the Duck-billed dog.

Quoof walked slowly and sadly back up the garden path.
High up in a tree a Kookaburra laughed.
"Ha! Ha! Ha! Ho! Ho! Ho! Ku! Ku! Ku!
Ko!"
"Are you laughing at
me?" said Quoof.
"Yes! You Look so funny!" said the Kookaburra.
"But... I didn't ask for a duck-bill!" said Quoof

"So, now you have it, you had better make the best of it!"
And at that the Kookaburra laughed so much that he almost fell off the branch backwards.

AH!. A lovely bone for breakfast; but I have no teeth! How can I eat it?
I will bury it until tomorrow.

Placing the bone in a hole he'd dug with his fore-paws,
he shoveled the loose soil over the bone with his beak.
